This Australian study looks at the uptake and barriers to usage of the Australian Translating and Interpreting Service, the world’s largest free telephone health interpreter service. Whilst limited awareness of the service appears to be the most significant barrier to use, there also seems to be limited understanding amongst medical and reception staff of when it is appropriate to use interpretation services, with decision-making often deferred to GPs, or use of family members or bilingual staff to translate.
