This paper is an appraisal of the use of action research to bring about a change within the mainstream of health services to both black and white patients. The paper specifically examines a series of transformative processes to address institutional racism in provision of health care services to black elders, their carers and communities. It charts the path from articulating and making explicit the nature of racism in two health service organisations to one where health practitioners, professionals and managers were providing responsive services to black patients and improved services to white patients.
