This presentation examined the issue of health inequalities in old age, considering factors including the prevalence of health conditions, receipt of poorer services and poorer health outcomes. By focusing upon dementia, Jo Moriaty showed how racism, different expectations, and language and information barriers can cause older people to experience inequalities in health. However, consideration was also given to mechanisms to achieve better outcomes, including the use of the the National Service Framework for Older People and Race Relations Amendment Act as policies to address health inequalities in old age.
